The Breast Center, which has been operating in “ANASSA” for the last few months, is already giving the first results of comprehensive treatment of breast cancer cases, with a team of doctors consisting of Radiologists, Nuclear Physician, Breast Surgeons and Plastic Surgeon. We have already carried out the first cases in which the “sentinel lymph node” method was used in our city with radiolabeling, with minimal radiation, which is currently considered the most appropriate for tumors smaller than 2 cm, while until now the staining method was used with methylene blue.
The extension of screening to an increasing number of women with mammography and ultrasound, brings the diagnosis earlier and earlier, therefore at an earlier stage, consequently the better prognosis. This early diagnosis at our Center is accompanied by the possibility of directed biopsy and then, when the damage is small, this method of detecting the first lymph node that comes into contact with the damage is followed.
This first lymph node is sent for biopsy and if it proves to be metastatic, the patient undergoes a second axillary lymph node cleansing surgery to complete her staging. If, however, it is found without disease, the woman is freed from all possible complications, early and late, due to the absence of axillary lymph nodes (lymphorrhea, lymphedema, recurrent skin infections of the upper limb, inability to venipuncture for medical procedures, etc.)
So for some time now we have had the possibility of this comprehensive treatment of a high medical level in our city, giving the opportunity to the women who come to us to stay in the city and be treated at the same time with the best, scientifically possible way. In fact, most of the patients request to undergo, when this is oncologically correct, also a simultaneous plastic reconstruction of the breast, with a tissue expander and then an insert. This fact plays an important role in female psychology, keeping the morale alive and arming the patient with the necessary strength to complete her treatment protocol.
